PHILADELPHIA - Women's basketball standout Alyssa Baron will wear a different Red and Blue uniform later this month when she represents Team USA at the 19th Maccabiah Games, July 18-30, in Israel.
The Maccabiah Games is the third-largest sporting event in the world, with more than 1,100 U.S. athletes participating this year and 7,000 total athletes representing more than 50 countries. The Games are held every four years and serve as an international sporting event for Jewish athletes.
Baron will be joined on Team USA by fellow Ivy Leaguer Sophie Bikofsky of Brown and the pair will be led by head coach Jamie Shadian, who serves as an assistant at Northern Arizona University.
In 2012-13, during her first season as a captain, Baron was a unanimous first-team All-Ivy honoree and a first-team All-Big 5 selection. She led the Quakers in scoring (14.1), assists (3.8), steals (1.9), assist-to-turnover ratio (+1.3) and rebounding (6.4). Penn's 18 wins tied for second-most in program history and the team's nine non-league wins matched the school record set in 1999-00. Penn's 18-13 overall record marked the first winning season since 2004-05 and the team's best record since the 2000-01 team set the school standard with 22 wins.
