PHILADELPHIA - Just a few months removed from lifting the Ivy League trophy, the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball is set to take on Europe. The Quakers will play three games on a 10-day Italy tour from Aug. 11-21. The trip includes stops in Milan, Lake Como, Switzerland, Venice, Rome and Florence.
For the duration of the team's Italy Tour, the coaches and players will document the trip in their "When in Rome..." travel log which can be found here. You can also follow the Quakers on twitter and instagram. Search the hashtag #QuakersTakeItaly to easily access all of the team's updates from Europe.
Penn's three games are set for Thursday, Aug. 14 against an Italian all-star team at noon (EST) in Costa Masnaga; Sunday, Aug. 17 against AS Virtus La Spezia at noon (EST) in La Spezia; and Monday, Aug. 18 against Chemcats Chemnitz (Germany) at 1 p.m. (EST) in Pistoia.
The Quakers will play their European opponents based on FIBA rules. Major differences include: four 10-minute quarters, 24-second shot clock, 8-second backcourt violations, and a trapezoid key. The three-point line is nearly a foot further than the NCAA line.
Outside of competition, the Quakers will have guided tours of Lake Como, St. Marc's Basilica, the Grand Canal into Venice, Accademia Gallery (Michelangelo's David), Leaning Tower of Pisa, Colosseum, Roman Forum and the Vatican, among others.
