PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women’s soccer program has begun spring practices, as it prepares for the 2014 season in September.
This spring, the Quakers will play three matches, starting with the annual Alumni Game this Saturday, March 29, at noon on Rhodes Field. Following that, Penn has intercollegiate matches scheduled at Georgetown (Sunday, April 6 at 1 p.m.) and on Rhodes Field against city rival La Salle (Friday, April 18 at 7 p.m.).
“We are using the spring to play against quality teams with NCAA postseason experience,” said Penn head coach Darren Ambrose, who enters his 15th season at the helm. “We have an opportunity to experiment a little with the attacking side of our game and also refine some of the defensive principles that have been so successful for us over the past few years.”
Penn will be looking to improve on an exceptional 2013 season, when the Quakers finished 12-1-4 overall -- setting a school record for fewest losses -- and finished second in the Ivy League at 5-1-1. Penn returns 15 letterwinners from last year’s team, including six starters and a trio of first-team All-Ivy players in juniors Caroline Dwyer, Erin Mikolai and Kalijah Terilli.
“The women have worked at an extraordinary pace in the weight room and in their approach to their fitness level over the winter,” said Ambrose.
