USTFCCCA Release

NCAA Results

PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Thomas Awad and Maalik Reynolds were each awarded Outdoor All-America honors on Monday by the U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Awad earned honorable mention status and Reynolds was a first-team selection for the fourth time in his career.

The last time two Quakers earned outdoor All-America honors in the same year was in 2003 when Sam Burley claimed the national title in the outdoor 800 meters and Brian Chaput won the national championship with an Ivy League record in the javelin.

Awad ran for the national title in the 5,000 meters against the top 24 runners in the nation on Saturday. In front of a final-day crowd of 11,482, the East Norwich, N.Y., native finished in 14:24.81 to place 18th overall. In addition to his NCAA Finals appearance, he owns the third-fastest outdoor 5,000 meters in school history after he ran 14:04.24 at the NCAA East Preliminaries. He also ran the fifth-fastest indoor 3,000 meters (8:10.20) in program history and scored for the Quakers at both the indoor and outdoor Heptagonal Championships.

On Friday, junior high jumper Maalik Reynolds finished sixth to earn his fourth career All-America accolade at Penn (three outdoor, one indoor). Reynolds matched two Olympic medalists jump-for-jump for most of the afternoon and finished at 2.20 meters (7 feet, 2 1/2 inches) to earn three team points for the Quakers. A four-time heptagonal champion and six-time All-Ivy honoree in addition to an indoor IC4A and Penn Relays champion, Reynolds has earned outdoor All-America honors in each of his first three seasons as a member of the Red and Blue. As a freshman in 2011, the Atlanta, Ga., native became the first Penn men's outdoor All-American since Courtney Jaworski earned the honor in the 800 meters in 2005.

Awad and several Quakers are expected to continue the year and compete in the USA Junior Outdoor Championships, June 19-22. PennAthletics.com will have all the updates on the Quakers throughout the summer.
