NCAA East Preliminary Round Homepage PHILADELPHIA - Seniors Darryll Oliver and Luke Grau were joined by sophomore Tim Carey and freshman Maalik Reynolds in the championship field announced by
the NCAA on Thursday afternoon. The four members of the University of
Pennsylvania men's track and field team will compete in the NCAA
East Preliminary Round, May 26-28, on the campus of Indiana University
in Bloomington, Ind. In each region, the top 48 marks in each event qualify for the NCAA Preliminary Rounds. This marks the second straight NCAA appearance for both Oliver and Carey. Oliver, who reached the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2010, ranks No. 8 in the East in the 800 meters after his runner-up performance of 1:48.46 at the IC4A Championships Sunday. Grau got into the field in the 5,000 meters when he posted the seventh-best mark in school history - 14:12.24 - at the Penn Relays. Carey qualified in the 400-meter hurdles for the second time in two years with a season-best time of 52.44, ranking him 41st in the East. Reynolds, already a two-time Heps champion, is the No. 2 seed in the high jump with his school-record height of 2.28 meters (7 feet, 5 3/4 inches). The
NCAA Championship meet extends over two weekends
in a three-week span at three different sites. The first weekend is now
known as the NCAA Preliminary Round and is broken up into two different
sites - East (Bloomington, Ind.) and West (Eugene, Ore.), which host the
NCAA first round and quarterfinal round in each event as well as some
of the NCAA semifinals. The top 24 finishers in the first round advance to the
quarterfinals where the top 12 will advance to compete in the
semifinals and finals of the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa,
June 8-11. |
