BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior Darryll Oliver reached Friday's NCAA Quarterfinals in the 800 meters and freshman Maalik Reynolds finished first in the high jump to secure a spot in the NCAA Finals. Also at the NCAA East Preliminary Round for the Unviersity of Pennsylvania men's track and field team in Bloomington, Ind., on Thursday, sophomore Tim Carey wrapped up his season in the 400-meter hurdles.

Reynolds claimed one of the 12 spots in the NCAA Finals with just one miss on five attempts. He and eight other competitors all cleared 2.17 meters (7 feet, 1 1/2 inches). Following that height, there was no need to move the bar any higher as the remaining competitors had all clinched a trip to Des Moines, Iowa. Reynolds, who qualified for the indoor NCAA Championships but was unable to compete due to food poisoning, cleared 2.06 meters on the first attempt. He then passed 2.11 meters on his second try and it took just one jump apiece to clear the last two heights.

Oliver automatically clinched a spot in the NCAA Quarterfinals with a second-place finish in his heat. On the E.C. Billy Hayes Track at Indiana University's Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex, Oliver finished in a time of 1:49.36 and nearly won the heat, but was edged by Virginia's Robby Andrews by 25-hundreths of a second. Andrews and Oliver finished with the top two preliminary times in the 47-man field. The quarterfinals are set for 6:45 p.m., Friday. The top 12 finishers will reach the NCAA Semifinals in Des Moines.

The 2011 season came to an end for Carey in the 400-meter hurdles. He finished seventh in his heat with a time of 54.17. This marked the second straight year in which Carey reached the NCAA Championships in the event. He was an outdoor All-East honoree and a second-team indoor All-Ivy recipient this year.

Oliver is the only Quaker competing on Friday. Senior Luke Grau will run in the 5,000 meters at 8:45 p.m. on Saturday.

The NCAA Championship meet extends over two weekends in a three-week span at three different sites. The first weekend is now known as the NCAA Preliminary Round and is broken up into two different sites - East (Bloomington, Ind.) and West (Eugene, Ore.), which host the NCAA first round and quarterfinal round in each event as well as some of the NCAA semifinals.

The top 24 finishers in the first round advance to the quarterfinals where the top 12 will advance to compete in the semifinals and finals of the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, June 8-11. In the field events, the top 12 in each region advance to the NCAA Finals.
