PHILADELPHIA - Tuesday marks the first official practice for the University of Pennsylvania men's and women's track & field programs and the official announcement of the 2013-14 team captains. Jake Brenza, Karl Ingram, Conner Paez and Mason Smith will lead the men, while Heather Bong, Chelsea Delaney, Kersie Jhabvala and Jenny Thompson will captain the women.

Brenza has qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the shot put in each of the last two seasons. Ingram has led Penn in the javelin for each of the past three seasons and was All-Ivy as a sophomore. Paez, a consistent scorer for the cross country team, is also fifth all-time at Penn in the indoor 3,000 meters. Smith, who also serves as a return specialist and outside linebacker for the football team, has served as Penn's top sprinter in the 100 meters in each of his three seasons in the Red and Blue.

On the women's side, Bong holds the title of the fastest woman in program history with the school record in the 100 meters. Delaney is a two-time All-region honoree in track and is fourth all-time at Penn in the outdoor 4x800 relay. Jhabvala is one of the team's top distance and cross country scorers and Thompson remains most experienced jumpers.

Paez, Jhabvala and Delaney also served as captains for the men's and women's cross country teams, respectively.

The Quakers open the season at the Villanova Invitational on Dec. 7. The heart of the indoor season starts Jan. 18 with the Lehigh Challenge in Bethlehem, Pa.
