PHILADELPHIA - Classes have begun again at the University of Pennsylvania which also signals the start of the indoor track and field season. The Quakers will head to Lehigh's Rauch Fieldhouse for the Angry Birds Invitational on Saturday.
The four-team meet will officially get underway at 10 a.m. with the women's weight throw. The track events begin at 11 a.m. with the women's 5,000 meters and conclude with the men's 4x400-meter relay at 3:55 p.m.
At this meet last season, Jenny Thompson was victorious in the triple jump and Kersie Jhabvala was tops in the 3,000 meters as the women finished second. The men will also bring back several defending champions as Thomas Pitt won the high jump and long jump, and Clark Shurtleff (mile) and Connor Ryan (5,000 meters) also posted victories for the Quakers, who won the meet with 181 team points.
Penn most recently competed at Lehigh in what was the true season opener for the Red and Blue on Dec. 7. Sophomore Tom Pitt earned a victory in the heptathlon and sophomore Chad Payne won the 60 and 200 meters as part of six victories for the men, who won the six-team meet with 39.5 points. On the women's side, seven individuals and a relay team posted victories to propel the Quakers to a first-place finish in the seven-team meet with 56.5 points.
