PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania’s wrestling team will welcome eight newcomers in the fall, adding seven freshmen and a transfer to the lineup for the 2014-15 season.
The Quakers will add three state champions to the lineup and a fourth wrestler who won four state championships in New York’s Catholic School division. In total, Penn’s eight newcomers have 16 combined podium finishes during their high school careers in traditional wrestling powerhouse states of Missouri, New Jersey, New York and Ohio.
The Red and Blue have added new grapplers to all portions of the lineup, with five middleweights headed to University City in addition to one lightweight and a pair of upperweights.
The eight newcomers will join 23 returning wrestlers for the 2014-15 season. Penn will return all four of its NCAA qualifiers from last season, including 184-pound All-American Lorenzo Thomas. Nine of Penn’s 10 starters from 2013-14 will return, as will 2013 NCAA qualifiers Canaan Bethea and C.J. Cobb who did not compete last season.
