Wrestling to Compete in Grapple at the Garden

NEW YORK, N.Y. – “The World’s Most Famous Arena” will once again be hosting a premier collegiate wrestling event this season, and Penn will make its first trip to Madison Square Garden to compete in the second Grapple at the Garden event on December 1.
MSG Sports announced a 12-team field for the Grapple at the Garden today, with Penn one of six teams ranked in the final NWCA Top-25 Poll of 2012-13 to enter the event. The Quakers, ranked No. 21 at the end of last season, will be joined by No. 8 Illinois, No. 9 Cornell, No. 15 Bloomsburg, No. 24 Maryland and No. 25 Rutgers in the Big Apple. Army, Boston University, Drexel, George Mason, Hofstra and Princeton round out the competing teams.

Each team will wrestle two duals at the Grapple at the Garden, Penn beginning the day with a 10 a.m. dual against first-year EIWA foe Boston University. The Quakers and Terriers have not me in a dual meet since 1991 – a 24-14 win for Boston University in a match at Brown.

After tangling with the Terriers, Penn will battle Bloomsburg at noon. The Quakers are 4-1 all-time in duals with Bloomsburg, the last meeting a 26-12 win for Penn at Bloomsburg on Dec. 2, 2011.

“This event is a great opportunity for Penn and we are excited to participate in the Grapple at the Garden," head coach Rob Eiter said. “Madison Square Garden is known as ‘The World's Most Famous Arena’, and it will be an amazing experience for our team to be a part of this unique atmosphere. We have a very strong alumni base in New York City, and I know they will be excited to support Penn wrestling in a venue like MSG."

The full day of wrestling on December 1 will consist of two separate sessions with the first starting at 10:00 a.m. with Maryland vs. Cornell, Rutgers vs. George Mason, Illinois vs. Bloomsburg, Hofstra vs. Army, Boston U. vs. Penn and Drexel vs. Princeton.  Session two is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. and will feature Cornell vs. Illinois, Rutgers vs. Maryland, Princeton vs. Army, Bloomsburg vs. Penn, George Mason vs. Drexel and Hofstra vs. Boston U.
