PHILADELPHIA - Amber Woo has been named ECAC Rookie of the Week for the third time this season after scoring 9.6 on three of her four routines this past Friday at Towson. In total, Penn has won eight different awards from the ECAC during the 10 weeks to date. Four of those honors have been rookie of the week honors. In addition to Woo, Amanda Schlaefer earned one rookie of the week honor earlier this season.
Woo got her day at Towson off to a quick start with a season best on the floor exercise. In her first event of the day, Penn's freshman scored 9.775, which broke her previous high this season by two-tenths of a point. On the vault, Woo added a 9.6 for Penn's third-highest score on the event. Her first two scores gave her a pair of 12th place finishes to start her day.
On the uneven bars, Woo scored 9.625, which helped Penn tie its season-high 48.725 on bars; the third-best mark in the history of the program. Her bars score placed her 13th at the end of the meet. Finishing up her day on the balance beam, Woo scored 9.075 to finish that event in 17th place overall. Her four scores gave her a combined total of 38.075, which placed her eighth overall in the all-around.
Woo is the only Penn freshman to have competed in the all-around this season. She has been an all-around gymnast in seven of Penn's 10 meets. She is ranked 13th in the all-around for the conference (38.080 RQS) and 10th on the balance beam (9.695 RQS), scoring 9.65 or higher in six different meets. She has scored 9.525 or higher on six of her eight vaults and 9.6 or higher on five of her last seven bars routines.
Woo and the rest of her Quaker teammates are currently in preparations for this weekend's ECAC Championships that are being hosted by Penn. The ECAC Championships will be held this Saturday inside The Palestra. The official competition will get underway at noon.
