BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - One of the most exciting and decorated gymnastics seasons in program history came to an end Saturday afternoon in Bridgeport at the USAG Event Finals. Dana Bonincontri and Kirsten Strausbaugh represented the team on the final day. With their first-team USAG All-America status already cemented by qualifying in six different events, the two juniors could just focus on hitting their routines.
Bonincontri was the Quakers lone qualifier on vault. Towards the end of the season she left her name all over the vaulting records books. Today, she finished her final vault with a 9.7625, which was good enough to put her in ninth overall. She was also Penn's lone competitor on the balance beam. On this event, she posted her third straight solid score of the week, 9.75, to finish this event in seventh.
Both Quakers competed on the uneven bars and floor. On bars, Bonincontri used Penn's highest score of the day, 9.825, to finish this event with her highest place of the day, finishing in second. Taking her turn on the uneven bars, Strausbaugh used a 9.425 to finish this event in 10th.
On the floor, it was Strausbaugh that would lead the way for Penn in this event. She posted a 9.8 in her final floor routine of the season to finish this event in fifth. Her teammate, Bonincontri, finished right behind in sixth-place with a score of 9.775. Although the all-around was not an official competition in the event finals, Bonincontri did tally a combined 39.1125 on her last day of competition as she qualified in all four events. This marked the third straight day that she went 39-plus combined as she completed 12 events in the past three days.
For the weekend, Penn claimed nine first-team USAG All-Americans and three second-team USAG All-Americans.
