PHILADELPHIA – The Penn gymnastics team saw two of its gymnasts honored by the ECAC this week following their dominant performances in the win over Ursinus in Collegeville, Pa. on March 3.
Elyse Shenberger was named ECAC Rookie of the Week for the third time this season. The freshman competed in just two events on Sunday after participating as an all-arounder in the previous three meets. The Hummelstown, Pa. native wowed the judges with her bar routine, scoring a career-high 9.850 to place first. Individually, Shenberger’s score tied for the seventh-highest program history. Additionally, her score helped Penn to a 48.775 overall on bars, which tied for the second-highest in program history.
Kirsten Strausbaugh earned the ECAC Coaches Choice award, and now has two ECAC awards this season – she was named ECAC Gymnast of the Week after her outstanding performance against Bridgeport at The Palestra on Feb. 17. The senior earned this week’s award after placing first in the all-around against Ursinus with a 38.600 and scoring two 9.800 to place first on floor and second on bars. Strausbaugh is currently ranked as the top all-around Division I gymnast in the ECAC.
The Quakers will be back on the mat on March 9 when they travel to State College, Pa. for a quad-meet. The Red and Blue will face New Hampshire, Temple and host Penn State in a meet scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
