ECAC Release

PHILADELPHIA – After their second consecutive ECAC title last weekend, the Penn gymnastics squad had five members earn all-ECAC honors. Seniors Kirsten Strausbaugh, Megan Milavec and Dana Bonincontri, sophomore Amanda Schlaefer and freshman Elyse Shenberger were the honorees.

For Strausbaugh, she adds the honor to her already stellar senior season in which she was named co-ECAC Athlete of the Year as well as earning her third-career invite to the NCAA regional championships. The Virginia Beach, Va. native was named first-team all-ECAC on bars – she tied for second with a 9.800 – and in the all-around where she placed second with a 38.775. The Penn co-captain has now been named all-ECAC seven times in her career and now has a total of five first-team honors as well.

Milavec was named first-team all-ECAC on beam – she tied for third with a 9.800 – and all-around where she placed third with a 38.650. The senior was Penn’s only individual champion at the Ivy Classic, scoring a career-high 9.900 which was the third-highest score in program history. The two first-team honors are also a career high for Milavec, who now has a total of four all-ECAC honors during her four years as a Quaker.

Schlaefer earns the honor for the first time in her career. After missing most of last season and the first meet of 2013 with an injury, the sophomore competed as a specialist on beam all season long. Ultimately, Schlaefer was able to put together a career high performance at the championships, and tied for third on beam with 9.800, earning herself first-team all-ECAC honors in that event.

Bonincontri earned second-team honors on bars after placing fourth with a 9.775. The senior has now compiled a program-record 12 all-ECAC honors, in addition to her 2011 ECAC Athlete of the Year award. Despite battling a nagging injury for most of the season, Bonincontri was able to compete in at least two events during her last four meets, including three at the ECAC championships.

Shenberger joins Schlaefer is the other first-time honoree for the Red and Blue. The freshman stepped into a large role this season due to the hole left by Bonincontri. The rookie did not disappoint, competing as an all-arounder in four meets this season, while competing in at least three events in every other meet. Shenberger tied for fourth with a 9.800 on floor at ECACs, earning herself second-team honors.
