Thursday Results

Cambridge, Mass. - With a NCAA 'B' time of 4:44.91, sophomore Shelby Fortin earned her second consecutive Ivy League title in the 500 Freestyle and provided the Quakers with a huge lift on Day One of the Ivy League Championships, held at Harvard's Blodgett Pool.

Although her preliminary swim in the morning session trailed behind Harvard's Kelsey Hojan Clark by a few hundredths of a second, Fortin bested that time in this evening's final by over four seconds and claimed the crown over another Crimson swimmer, Courtney Otto, earning the fourth individual title of her career. Kristi Edleson's time of 4:54.05 put her 13th overall.

The night opened with the 200 Freestyle Relay, where Fortin teamed up with Tina Hurley, Jenny Claydon and Lauryn Brown for a time of 1:34.66. Although the result was only good for seventh place, it came in as the third fastest time in Penn history.

Following the 500 Free, teammates Katherine Ashenfelter (2:04.72) and Sammi Husband (2:04.91) finished back-to-back in the consolation final of the 200 IM to place 14th and 15th overall, respectively. Ashenfelter's time was her best of 2011-12 while Husband's set a personal best.

In the 50 Freestyle, Hurley swam a personal best time of 23.62, finishing fifth and a mere .03 out of third place. Meanwhile, in the diving competition, Jacqui Snell was the lone Quaker to advance out of Thursday morning's prelims. Her cumulative score of 200.00 on Thursday evening placed her 16th overall.

Thursday's final event was the 400 Medley Relay. With the second-fastest time in school history, the team of Brown, Laura Klick, Taylor Sneed and Fortin placed seventh overall with a time of 3:48.01.

Penn begins Day Two of the championships on Friday morning with preliminary swims starting at 11 a.m. The championship finals will be held beginning at 6 p.m. Live results throughout the day can be found here.
