Boca Raton, Fla. - The Quakers dropped their first meet of the 2011 on Wednesday, falling to Brown 165.5-135.5 on the campus to Florida Atlantic University.
Penn was one of five teams swimming at FAU, battling Brown, Florida Atlantic and nationally ranked LSU (22nd) and Purdue (19th). The Red and Blue got four top-three finishes in the meet as the team lost to Brown, LSU and Purdue and earned its lone victory against the host school (225-73).
Freshman Julia Anderson was the Quakers' top swimmer on the day swimming to a pair of second place finishes. The freestyler opened the meet by taking second in the 1,000 with a time of 10:25.65 and then swam the 500 in 5:05.02 for her second top-two finish.
Senior Madeline Bauer had Penn's other second place finish, using her score to 235.40 to place second in the 3-meter diving event. In the 1-meter, freshman Jacqui Snell earned a third place finish with her score of 214.75.
Freshman Katherine Ashenfelter also swam well on the day, taking fourth in two events and finishing sixth in another. She finished fourth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:08.81) and 200-yard I.M. (2:09.59) and sixth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.22). Sophomore Melissa Parratto was just two hundredths of a second behind Ashenfelter in the I.M. (2:10.01) and also earned a fourth place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.99).The Quakers return to the pool a week from Saturday, Dec. 15, when they travel to New Haven to swim against Dartmouth and Yale, beginning at 10 a.m.
