PHILADELPHIA – A quick cold spell in Philadelphia didn’t deter the University of Pennsylvania bats, as the Quakers slugged 14 hits en route to defeating the University of the Sciences, 16-1, Wednesday afternoon at Meiklejohn Stadium.

Penn (20-12) collected 14 hits, including six doubles, on its way to scoring 16 runs against the Devils (5-26).

The Quakers have now 18 of their last 21 games this season.

Highlighting Penn's offensive barrage were sophomore Mike Vilardo and junior Jeff McGarry. Vilardo totaled three hits in the game, all doubles, while also scoring three runs and driving in one. McGarry went 2-for-3, with a double, and four RBIs.

Freshman Jack Hartman picked up the victory, throwing a scheduled three innings, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out one. With the win, Hartman improved his record to 4-0. Behind the left-handed starter, Mitchell Hammonds, Nick Pedalino, Andrew Burnick, and Mike Reitcheck combined for a scoreless six innings of relief work. Hammonds and Pedalino each struck out one, while Reitcheck fanned three.

After a scoreless first inning, Penn took advantage of four walks in the second inning combined with four hits, to score eight runs. The Quakers would go on to score three more times in the third, once in the fifth and sixth, with an additional three runs tacked on in the eighth inning.

Junior Austin Bossart had two hits for the Quakers, joining Vilardo and McGarry as the only other Penn batters with multiple hits.

Junior Paul Cotler doubled and scored a run, after entering the game as a defensive replacement.

Up next, Penn will return to Ivy League action, traveling to play Princeton in a doubleheader on both Saturday and Sunday. Games begin at 12 p.m. both days.
