Baseball Places Two on Philadelphia All-Big 5 Team

PHILADELPHIA –The University of Pennsylvania baseball team placed two individuals on the 2014 Philadelphia All-Big 5 team in senior outfield Rick Brebner, and junior right-handed starting pitcher Connor Cuff. Additionally, junior catcher Austin Bossart was named to the Big 5 Academic Team.

In his senior season Brebner led the Quakers in home run, with eight, and RBI with 31. The Langhorne, Pa. native earned Big 5 Player of the Week honors on April 8 after collecting nine hits, four home runs, and 12 RBI for the week. In addition to the Big 5 honor, he was also selected first-team All-Ivy for a second consecutive season.

On the mound, Cuff was 5-3 for Penn, while posting a 1.77 ERA in 66 innings of work. The junior from Western Springs, Ill. was second on the team in strikeouts with 49, while allowing only nine walks. Cuff earned Big 5 Pitcher of the Week honors on March 11, and Co-Pitcher of the Week on April 8. He additionally was named first-team All-Ivy for the first time this spring.

Named to the Academic team, Bossart drove in 19 runs for the Quakers, while throwing out 11 of 31 base runners from behind the dish during his junior season. He finished the academic year with a 3.48 GPA in economics. Bossart earned Big 5 Player of the Week honors on April 22, after totaling seven hits, including a home run, and three RBI in four games with Princeton.

Saint Joseph’s graduate student Collin Forgey (San Diego, Calif.) and SJU  senior Jordan Carter (Collegeville, Pa.) were named the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively, in voting conducted by the city’s head coaches and sports information offices.
