PHILADELPHIA - Though the Penn baseball team struggled over the weekend against Columbia, Ryan Deitrich was red-hot, batting .500 over four games with six doubles. For his efforts, the junior outfielder was rewarded with the Big 5 Player of the Week honor, the first of his career.

Facing one of the top pitching staffs in the Ivy League, Deitrich was at times the only spark that the Quakers had in their order. In the final two homes games of the season on Friday he went 2-for-4 in each game, all four hits on the afternoon being doubles including two that came within an eyelash of flying out of the park.

The hit parade continued on Saturday as Penn rode Deitrich to an 8-5 win in the opener. In that game, he added three more hits (two of them being doubles) and scored a pair of runs, helping the Red and Blue recover from a late deficit. He wrapped up the year with a 0-for-2 game in the season finale, but was walked and hit by a pitch, raising his on-base percentage to .404 for the year. Coming into the weekend batting .333, his seven hits on the weekend raised his average 17 points and he ended the year hitting a team-best .350.
