PHILADELPHIA – A pair of University of Pennsylvania softball players, Elysse Gorney and Sydney Turchin, will wear a different Red and Blue uniform later this month when they represent Team USA at the 19th Maccabiah Games in Israel.

The Maccabiah Games are the third-largest sporting event in the world, with more than 1,100 U.S. athletes participating this year and 7,000 total athletes representing more than 50 countries. The Games are held every four years and serve as an international sporting event for Jewish athletes.

The women’s open softball tournament will run from July 21-29. Click here for the full softball schedule.

A rising senior, Gorney has been an All-Ivy selection each of her first three years at Penn. Last year, she started 44 games and led the team with 36 runs scored while placing third in on-base percentage (.389) and stolen bases (5). In 2012, Gorney was second on the team in runs, hits, doubles and stolen bases as she received first-team All-Ivy recognition.

A rising junior, Turchin has been a second-team All-Ivy selection each of the last two years, and this past season she started 43 of Penn’s 44 games in left field. She led the Quakers with 141 at-bats in 2013, tied for first with a pair of triples, and was second with 13 stolen bases. Turchin was the team’s Offensive MVP as a freshman, leading Penn in several offensive categories and leading the Ivy League in runs while finishing second in walks, stolen bases and at-bats and fourth in hits.

Both Gorney and Turchin were among the team leaders this past season, as Penn won its second Ivy League title -- the first one came in 1981 -- and earned its first NCAA Championship appearance. The Quakers went 30-20 overall and rolled up a 16-4 mark against Ancient Eight opposition before defeating Dartmouth in the best-of-three Ivy League Championship Series, two games to one.
