VILLANOVA, Pa. – In the final nonconference game of the season, the University of Pennsylvania softball team fell to Villanova, 4-0, in the cold and rain. Freshman Courtney Cuzick, freshman Alexis Sargent, and sophomore Lauren Li all saw time in the circle for the Red and Blue. The Wildcats were the last team for the Quakers before this weekend’s Ivy Championship series with Dartmouth.WP: Kate Poppe (13-23), 6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 11 K

Villanova opened the game with two unearned runs in the bottom of the first, after the Quakers committed two errors. The Wildcats then tacked on a third run in the bottom of the second from a base hit that dropped in shallow right field.
Penn threatened to score in the top of the third when tri-captain Sydney Turchin led off with a base hit up the middle. Sophomore Kanani Datan followed Turchin’s hit with a second single that dropped just fair inside the left line. After senior tri-captain Elysse Gorney walked to load the bases, the Quakers could not bring any home, recording three-straight outs.
In the bottom of the fifth, Wildcat Shea Palmer knocked in Villanova’s fourth run with a ground out RBI to freshman second baseman Emily Stinnett.
The Red and Blue once again threatened to score in the top of the sixth with three on the bags. Freshman Alexis Sargent singled through the left side and the next Quaker to reach base was sophomore Lauren Li, who was hit in the ankle by a pitch. With one out, freshman Cedar Slovacek placed the ball perfectly in shallow right field for a base hit to load up the bases. But once again, Penn was unable to bring any home and left all three stranded.
Even though the regular season is now over, the Red and Blue will now focus their time on preparing for the Ivy League Championship series this weekend. A rematch of last year’s series with Dartmouth will take place in Hanover on Saturday. A third game will be played on Sunday, if necessary. Stay tuned to PennAthletic.com for more details.
