PHILADELPHIA – It was a tough day for Penn softball (4-10) on Wednesday afternoon. The Quakers played just one game of a scheduled doubleheader against Saint Joseph’s (11-3-1), falling 5-0. Game 2 was cancelled due to dropping temperatures and forecast for rain. A depleted Penn pitching staff did not help matters either.
The Red and Blue were held without a hit until the top of the fourth inning and the Hawks scored four of their five runs in the first two innings. Borden, who was not originally scheduled to pitch, committed a fielding error and gave up two hits and three runs in the bottom half of the first. The sophomore would give up one run in the bottom of the second, but settle in from then on.
Additionally, the Quakers struggled to make solid contact at the plate. They did have chances to get some offense though, as during the bottom of the third Penn loaded the bases on a couple of walks and an error with one out. Unfortunately the Red and Blue could not capitalize on what was their best scoring chance of the afternoon.
Brooke Coloma and Georgia Guttadauro had the lone hits for the Quakers. Coloma is second on the team in batting this season with a .323 average and leads the team with 10 total hits. Guttadauro’s hit was just her second of the season. The junior made solid contact on a single up the middle and looks to resume her success at the plate from last season when she led Penn with a .488 slugging percentage.
Sydney Turchin also made a splash with her glove in back-to-back plays at left field in the bottom of the fifth. On the first play, after almost bobbling the ball and allowing the runner to advance, the sophomore recovered and gunned down the runner at second base. The following play, Borden gave up a long fly that was destined to go over the fence in deep left field. Turchin snagged the ball on the other side of the fence and pulled it back over for the second out of the inning.
The Quakers will be back in action for their home-opener on March 16. Lafayette (3-8) comes to Penn Park for a doubleheader and first pitch for Game 1 is schedule for 1 p.m. Live stats and live radio will be available for both games and make sure to follow @UPennSoftball on twitter for live in-game updates as well.
