PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania softball team (17-14, 7-1 Ivy) had its four-game win streak snapped at home on Thursday evening, falling to Big 5 rival Villanova (15-20, 2-9 Big East) 9-0 in a five-inning game. Penn is now 0-2 against Big 5 teams on the season, and will now prepare for three more Ivy League weekends to finish out the regular season.

The scoring began quickly in the top of the first for the Wildcats. With one out and runners on the corners for Villanova, its third baseman would slap an RBI-single through the left side for one. The next batter would hit a slow-rolling RBI-single at Samantha Erosa, leaving the runner on second base with enough time to get home safely. The following at-bat led to a three-run shot over the centerfield wall. The Wildcats took a 5-0 lead after one.

Nova would get two more across in the second off three Penn errors, marking the end of the day for Gisonni after two innings pitched. Lauren Li came on in relief in the top of the third, and the freshman would surrender two more as well. Li would pitch a scoreless fourth inning and Lindsay Mann would do the same in relief during the top of the fifth as well.

Unfortunately the Quakers’ bats were unable to keep up with the Wildcats’ arms on the night, and Penn would fall by a final of 9-0 in five innings.

The Red and Blue will look to shake off their tough mid-week loss this weekend when they welcome Princeton (20-12, 4-4) to Penn Park on Saturday and Sunday for a pair of afternoon doubleheaders. Penn and the Tigers are the only two squads in the league with a conference record over .500 as the Quakers hold a two-game lead over Princeton for first place in the South Division.

Live stats and live radio will be available for all four contests against the Tigers. Also, make sure to follow @UPennSoftball for live in-game updates and conversation all weekend long.
