PHILADELPHIA -- What a Sunday in University City! History was made for the University of Pennsylvania in a span of 51 minutes as for the first time in Penn history, two women's programs secured automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament on the same day.
First, it was women's lacrosse at 1:53 p.m. -- securing a seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance with a 10-7 win over Dartmouth in the Ivy League Tournament championship game.
A little under an hour later -- at 2:44 p.m. to be exact -- softball recorded the final out against Dartmouth to finish off a 3-2 win in a deciding Game Three of the Ivy League Championship Series and earn the program's first Ivy League championship and NCAA Tournament appearance since 1981.
With the wins, both programs extend their seasons. Women's Lacrosse will take on Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on May 10 at 3 p.m. in a game played at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. For softball, its NCAA destination will be revealed via the NCAA Selection Show May 12 at 10 p.m. EST.
