PHILADELPHIA -- University of Pennsylvania freshman softball pitcher Alexis Sargent gave the Quakers a spark with her three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning during the game against Delaware. Unfortunately, it wasn't quite enough as the bats fell cold in the Thursday doubleheader with two local rivals. Penn started the evening with Big 5 rival La Salle, falling to the Explorers, 5-0. The Red and Blue followed up with a second game against UD and dropped the contest to the Blue Hens, 5-3. Penn is now 4-11 before opening Ivy Play this weekend with Yale and Brown.
Tonight’s games combined, Penn recorded a total of 3 R, 10 H, 3 E, 12 LOB.
Game 1 – La Salle (9-8)
WP: Mary Cate Scott (3-5), 5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
LP: Alexis Borden (2-6), 6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K
In the first three innings, Penn and La Salle combined for only two hits. The Quakers recorded the first hit of the game in the bottom of the first inning when senior tri-captain Elysse Gorney singled through the right side. The Explorers responded in the top of the second with a single up the middle from Alicia Aughton.
La Salle first got on the board in the top of the fourth when Aughton homered to left center with a runner on second to put the Explorers up 2-0. The Red and Blue tried to responded in the second half of the fourth as sophomore Korinne Raby doubled to left field with two outs. However, the visitors held off the Quakers from scoring and the score remained.
The Explorers tacked on three more runs – one in the sixth and two in the seventh -- to increase the lead to 5-0. Penn just couldn’t advance anyone home and lost the first game.
Game 2 – Delaware (9-15)
WP: Carolyn Szymanski (5-8), 4.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
Save: Kelly Lupton
LP: Courtney Cuzick (0-3), 4.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Delaware came ready to play and quickly put up a run with help from Danielle Wissinger’s double to center field. The Blue Hens increased their lead to 4-0 in the top of the third but found themselves only up by one once again after Sargent hit a three-run home run past right center in the bottom of the third.
With the top of the order due up to start the fifth, right fielder Jessica Grisler hit a solo shot to center field, putting UD up by two, 5-3.
As both teams were unable to score any more runs, the Blue Hens came out on top with the win.
Penn will be back in action this weekend to open Ivy Play. Doubleheaders with Yale and Brown were scheduled for Friday and Saturday but have now been moved to Sunday and Monday. Continue to check PennAlthetics.com for updates.
