RALEIGH, N.C. - The Penn men's golf team is in 12th place after Saturday's first round at the 36-hole Wolfpack Spring Open, being hosted by North Carolina State at the par-71 Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
Penn shot 315 as a team and is one stroke behind George Mason and eight strokes behind Maryland. Lamar leads the event after shooting a team 290, one shot ahead of Richmond (291). Those two teams were the only ones to break 300 for the day.
Individually, Dillon Hakes was Penn's low scorer as he shot a 78. That was just one shot ahead of three of his teammates: P.J. Fielding, Max Marsico, and Scotty Williams. Colin St. Maxens carded an 81 and is tied for 55th in the field, while Philip Winter -- playing as an individual -- shot an 86 and is 66th.
Richmond's Sam Beach leads the event after shooting a 2-under-par 69. He is one shot ahead of two Lamar players, Xavier Feyaerts and MJ Daffue.
The tournament concludes Sunday with a second round.
