New Haven, Conn. – The University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team returned to Philadelphia on Sunday from the 2013 Northeast Division I USTA/ITA Regional Championship in New Haven, Conn.  Of the seven Quakers that competed in regionals at Yale, six won at least one singles match.

The tournament began on Thursday with 48 players vying for a chance to enter the tournament via the qualifying singles, two of them being freshman Thomas Spratt and senior Zach Katz. Spratt won the first round against Quinnipiac’s Eric Ambrosio but fell in the second round, missing the first qualifier spot, to Daniel Faierman from Yale. Katz clinched the eighth qualifier spot, after his wins over Monmouth’s Freddy Marcinkowski and Binghamton’s Alex Maisin.

First-round play in the Main Draw began on Friday, where 32 of the 96 players were seeded and received byes. Penn’s sophomore Vim De Alwis and senior Nikola Kocovic were among the 32 waiting to play in the second round on Saturday. The others representing Penn in the tournament went 2-2, with wins from freshman Marshall Sharp and junior Jeremy Court.

Saturday’s competition included the second and third rounds, which knocked out three of the four Quakers competing. Sharp saw his journey come to an end in the second round with a loss to Cornell’s Jason Luu, as did De Alwis when he was defeated by Harvard’s Andrew Ball, who entered the competition as the number 10 qualifier and went on to the quarter-finals. Court made his way through the second round with a win over Columbia’s Miguel Alda (6-3, 6-2) but fell to the number two seed, Denis Nguyen from Harvard. Nguyen went on to compete in the quarter finals. Kocovic climbed the farthest in the singles brackets but lost to Columbia’s Max Schnur, who’s win clinched a spot in the quarter finals.

Of the three doubles representing Penn, Kocovic and Nardella received a bye into the second-round play on Saturday. The other two pairings made it through the first round on Friday: Katz/De Alwis defeated Amyot/Solomon (Fairfield) 8-6 and Spratt/Sharp defeated Carrera/Knezevic (St. Peter’s) 8-2. Saturday was the end of the road for Katz/De Alwis and Kocovic/Nardella, as they went out in the second-round with losses to Sakinis/DeBot (Dartmouth) and Tesmond/Zlobinsky (Fairfield) respectively. The freshmen duo of Spratt/Sharp took out the 5-8) seeded Davies/McCourt pair from Princeton, 8-5, to advance to play on Sunday, where they came up short in a close match, 8-7, to another seeded Ivy pair, To/da Silveira (Brown).
