New Haven, Conn. - The Quakers played in four three-set matches on Friday but only won half of them as they fell to Yale by a 5-2 margin on the road. Penn wasn't able to get a doubles victory for just the second time all season as they lost all three in tight battles, 8-5, 8-6 and 8-4. In singles play, captain Hicham Laalej recovered from his first loss of the season last week at No. 1 singles. The senior won the first set 6-3, but dropped the second by the same score, before shutting out reigning Ivy Player of the Year Marc Power in the third set 6-0. Laalej's victory was just one of two in singles play for the Red and Blue, as freshman Nikola Kocovic also was victorious in three sets at No. 5 singles. Kocovic lost the first set 6-2 but fought back to take the final two 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Ivan Turudic and junior Phil Law kept Penn in the match by going to three sets, however, they couldn't finish off the comeback and lost at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. The loss drops Penn to 0-2 in the Ivy League and 10-3 overall. The Quakers return to action on Saturday when they play Brown at 2 p.m.
