PHILADELPHIA - The Quakers made it close but were unable to come away with a win in their final home match of the season, falling to Cornell 5-2 at the Lott Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon.
The sun was out but the Quakers couldn't score the upset against the Big Red who improve to 5-0 in the Ivy League and 22-4 overall with the win. Penn, meanwhile, falls to 12-6 with the loss and drops to 1-5 in league play.
Seniors Dmitry Bury, Zach Gorn and Hicham Laalej all played the final match of their home career on Friday with only Laalej coming away with a victory in singles. His win at singles improved his record to 14-2 and 4-2 to in Ivy League play.
In doubles, the No. 2 duo of Hicham Laalej and Mark Milbrandt won their match 8-5. Gorn and freshman Nikola Kocovic gave Penn a chance to capture the doubles point before ultimately falling 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
Laalej was the first Quaker to win, beating Andy Gauthier 7-5, 6-2. Laalej was down in the first set but then came back to win 7-5 before pulling out the victory. The Red and Blue's other win on the evening came from Phil Law at No. 3 singles. Law won the first set, 6-2 before dropping the second, 6-2. In the deciding set, the junior came away with the 6-4 win. He improves to 4-2 in Ivy play with the win. Three of Penn's four losses came in three sets, with Kocovic, Katz and Bury losing at 4-6.
The Quakers conclude their season on Sunday when they face Columbia at 2 p.m.
