PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team fell behind for the second straight Ivy League match in a row, this time to Brown. For the second straight match, Penn tried to rally but fell short, losing 5-2 to the Bears at the Pizzitola Center Courts. The Quakers are now 8-7 on the year (0-2 Ivy), with a record of just 1-7 on the road.
Penn fell behind in doubles yet again, losing all three matches. Jeremy Court and Kyle Roth were dropped, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles, and the Bears secured the point with an 8-5 win at No. 2 over Austin Kaplan and Zach Katz.
Brown expanded the lead in singles with Mike Hill downing Nikola Kocovic at No. 2, 6-4 and 6-4. Michael Riechmann followed, giving Brown a 3-0 edge with a 7-6(4), 6-4 win over Court at No. 1.
The Red and Blue fought back into it with consecutive wins from Blaine Willenborg and Ismael Lahlou. Willenborg took a first-set tiebreaker and used it as a springboard to ease past Sam Fife, 7-6(2), 6-2. Lahlou had to fight back after dropping the first set, but took control of the match late, winning 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
With the deficit slashed to 3-2, the Quakers couldn’t come all the way back, as a Brown win at No. 6 over Vim De Alwis clinched the match for the Bears, 6-3, 6-4. They added one final point at No. 5 as Zach Katz fell in a three-setter, 4-6, 6-4, 4-6.
Penn is back at it tomorrow, taking on No. 54 Yale at 2 p.m. in the final match of a five-match road trip.
