SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – With the score tied at three, the University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team clinched a victory after a thrilling match with UC Santa Barbara at the Rec Cen Courts on Tuesday. Junior Jeremy Court sealed the deal for the Quakers with his win at the No. 3 spot.
Penn jumped out to a 1-0 lead with identical scores of 8-6 at the No. 2 and 3 spots, taking the doubles point. Freshman Thomas Spratt and sophomore Austin Kaplan were first to complete their match at the No. 3 spot, defeating Teague Hamilton and Andrew Riminton. Senior co-captain Nikola Kocovic and freshman Matt Nardella, playing in the No. 2 slot, won the second doubles match, earning the point lead.
In singles play, UCSB tied the score with a win at the No. 2 spot; then took the lead with a win at the No. 5 spot. However, the Red and Blue responded after senior co-captain Zach Katz, playing at the No. 6 spot, defeated Miles Seemann (7-6, 6-1). In the No. 4 spot, Nardella defeated Erik Johnsson in three (6-4, 4-6, 6-1), but the Gauchos then took the No. 1 spot win.
That’s when it all came down to Court.
UCSB’s Sasha Gryaznov held the match point at 6-5 in the second set tiebreaker. A determined Court rattled off three straight points to win the tiebreaker 8-6 and the second set 7-6. A back and forth contest ensued in the third set but Court held on and lead the Quakers to their third victory this season.
