Penn Athletics is proud to honor Mr. Robert P. Levy C'52 with a special award tonight as we induct him into the Hall of Fame. A men's tennis player for his four years as a student, he is already a member of the Penn Tennis Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed stints as a coach with the women's team, both as head coach (fall 1985) and a volunteer assistant on some of the outstanding Quaker teams in the early 2000s.

Need further evidence of Mr. Levy's devotion to the Penn tennis programs? Check out the building on the West end of Penn Park, just south of the Class of 1923 Rink. The Robert P. Levy Tennis Pavilion -- built in 1973 and expanded in 1978 -- houses six tennis courts, and serves as the indoor home of the men's and women's tennis programs.

Mr. Levy (C'52) is past Chairman of DRT Industries, Inc., Atlantic City Racing Association and Chairman Emeritus of the Philadelphia Sports Congress. He also served on the board of Fasig-Tipton, a privately held auction company, for over 20 years and currently serves on the Board of Directors for Penn National Gaming, Inc., a NASDAQ-listed racing and gaming corporation that operates race tracks, off-track betting facilities and multifaceted casinos.

Mr. Levy is a recipient of the Athletic Award from the John B. Kelly Foundation, given annually to an individual who has "unselfishly contributed his time directly for the purpose of extending the future of youth sports." Other honors include the Service to Youth Award from the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, the Gold Football Award from Pop Warner Little Scholars Inc., the Philadelphia Police Athletic League's Man of the Year Award, the Alumni Award of Merit from the Penn Charter Alumni Society, and the Distinguished American Award from the Pennsylvania chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame.

Mr. Levy has been inducted to the William Penn Charter School Sports Hall of Fame, the University of Pennsylvania Tennis Hall of Fame, the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, the Police Athletic League Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. In 2003, he was awarded the John Wanamaker Lifetime Achievement Award and in November 2009, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Montgomery County Coaches Hall of Fame. Mr. Levy served on the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, and the President's Commission on Olympic Sports under President Reagan.

At Penn, Mr. Levy is a member and past Chair of the Board of Overseers of the School of Dental Medicine, a member of the Board of Overseers of the School of Veterinary Medicine, and a member of the Athletic Board of Overseers. In addition to the Levy Tennis Pavilion, Mr. Levy and his family made possible the creation of Blanche P. Levy Park in the center of campus, the Dental School's Levy Research Building, and the Paley Professorship for the Dean of the School of Design. Mr. Levy provides support for many areas of the University, including athletics and the School of Veterinary Medicine. He served on the Gift Committee for his class's 50th Reunion. Mr. Levy received the Alumni Award of Merit in 2003.

Levy statement

"I have reviewed the list of past honorees, and I am totally overwhelmed to be selected. To be mentioned in the same category as friends like Chuck Bednarik, Bernie Berlinger, Corky Calhoun, Dick Harter, Bob Odell and Dave Pottruck (to name a few) is way beyond any dream. To say I am thrilled is an understatement, and I am just happy that I have managed to survive long enough to participate."
