PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women’s tennis team (10-7, 2-4 Ivy) suffered a tough loss on Senior Day at the Hamlin Tennis Center on Friday afternoon, falling to No. 65 Columbia (12-5, 5-1), 4-0. The Quakers’ No.44-ranked doubles pair also saw its incredible 11-match win streak come to an end at the hands of the Lions’ No. 48-ranked pair. Penn will now take Saturday off as it travels north to Ithaca, N.Y. for its season finale at Cornell (13-3, 2-3).

Doubles

The Red and Blue fell behind early in doubles play, as their No. 2 duo of Stephanie Do and Alex Ion (7-4, 3-3) fell, 8-4, in the first completed match of the day. First doubles was next to finish, and it saw Penn’s star pair of Sol Eskenazi and Sonya Latycheva (14-2, 5-1) lose just their second match of the spring, and fourth overall, for their first Ivy defeat of the season. The young twosome fell to Bianca Sanon and Kanika Vaidya, who are ranked just four spots below them in the ITA doubles rankings. Third doubles would be called for a no decision once the first flight finished, giving Columbia the overall doubles point.

Singles

Things would not improve for the Quakers in singles play, as they were swept by the Lions for the quick 4-0 loss. Do (9-8, 1-5) was the first to fall as the junior co-captain suffered the straight set loss at second singles. Katherine Jania (6-5, 0-2) completed her match next a sixth singles, also falling in straight sets. Latycheva (11-5, 3-3) finished the day at third singles, falling in the first set 6-0 but taking the second set to a 7-5 tiebreak loss. With the overall match decided at 4-0, the coaches decided to call it, leaving the final three singles matches unfinished.

The action on the courts for the Red and Blue will continue in Ithaca. They are scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The Quakers will look to finish the season with 11 overall wins for the first time since the 2007-08 season when they placed second in the Ivy League.
