PHILADELPHIA – Moving into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings for the first time this year, the No. 68 University of Pennsylvania women’s tennis team will play host to neighbor Drexel on Friday afternoon. The match is a makeup from a previous postponement at the end of January.
Penn (3-3) moved into the ITA rankings after defeating then No. 57 Penn State on the road, 4-3, back on Feb. 16. Junior Alex Ion won the clinching match for the Quakers.
Penn will play Drexel (6-1) for just the ninth time overall, with the Quakers winning the previous eight meetings.
The neighbor schools have played intermittently in the past, beginning in 1973-1975, before resuming the series again in 2000. The Quakers and the Dragons then met up again in 2001 before squaring off in 2010 and 2011. The most recent time the two schools have met was in 2012, with Penn winning the match convincingly, 7-0.
Drexel’s most recent has come against Howard and La Salle last weekend, winning 6-1 and 7-0, respectively. The Dragons lone loss of the season so far came against Temple, 7-0, on Feb. 5.
Penn and Drexel’s match will take place in the Levy Tennis Pavilion beginning at 3 p.m.
