WomensLax.com Release  |  Ivy League Release

After a heart-pounding week which featured two overtime wins to run Penn’s winning streak to four games, a pair of Quakers earned recognition for their part in securing two huge wins for the Red and Blue. On the conference level, Meredith Cain’s all-around efforts earned her Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Sunday’s hero Shannon Mangini was named WomensLax.com National Player of the Week.

Mangini scored the overtime winner in Sunday’s 12-11 win over No. 10 Cornell, registering her fifth goal of the game with ten seconds left in the opening three-minute period of overtime. The five goals set a new career high for the junior and match her single-game high in points. Efficient is the perfect word to describe Mangini’s Sunday – she was 5-for-5 on shooting and 2-for-2 on free positions. She also added two ground balls and a draw control in the win over the Big Red.

Cain was named Defensive Player of the Week after a complete all-around performance on the field for the Quakers over their two games. She totaled 11 draw controls over Penn’s two wins, including a career-high six against Vanderbilt on Thursday in a 14-13 win over the Commodores. On Saturday versus the Big Red, she tied for the game-high in draw controls with five, adding one caused turnover and a ground ball. Along with her work in the midfield, Cain was a factor on offense with six goals and seven points over the weekend – including four goals against Cornell on Sunday.

The Quakers are 3-0 inside the Ivy League and 4-3 midway through the 2013 season. They head to No. 1 Maryland this Saturday for a 1 p.m. start.
