Ivy League Weekly Release

PHILADELPHIA – Lucy Ferguson was big in the first half of Penn’s season opener against Delaware, making five saves and keeping the Quakers in the game until their offense awoke in the second stanza to defeat the Blue Hens, 11-8.

On Monday, Ferguson was named Ivy League Co-Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts. This marks the third time in her career that she has earned Ivy Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Ferguson finished with six saves in the game, but was at her best when the Red and Blue needed her in the first half. Of her five first-half saves, two came on free position attempts – the only two Delaware would attempt all game.

Ferguson, a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection and a second-team All-Region honoree in 2013, was pretty much even with her 2013 goals-against average (884) on Saturday and her eight goals allowed against Delaware marked the ninth time in 18 career starts she has allowed eight or fewer goals.

The Quakers travel to No. 1 North Carolina March 2 for a 1 p.m. date with the defending national champions.
