PENNSAUKEN, N.J. – The University of Pennsyvlania’s women’s rowing program earned its first Ivy League Championship medals on Sunday, as the third varsity 8 took second place out of five boats on the Cooper River.

Rowing only an afternoon championship race, the Quakers clocked 7:22.321 over the 2,000-meter course and finished behind only Princeton (7:09.964). Radcliffe was third (7:26.566), followed by Cornell (7:34.754) and Yale (7:41.409). Ali Schwartz was coxswain of Penn's third varsity 8, with Claire Hutchins in the stroke seat; Gen Bouchard in the 7; Alix Roberts in the 6; Elizabeth Riehl in the 5; Kirsten Myers in the 4; Emily Samuelson in the 3; Christine Davis in the 2; and Amanda Borst in the 1.

Penn also advanced its varsity 4 A boat to the grand final on Sunday, where the Quakers finished sixth in 8:12.631. Brown won that championship race in 7:39.511, followed by Yale, Princeton, Radcliffe and Columbia.

Penn was eighth on the day in both the varsity 8 (7:01.264) and the second varsity 8 (7:27.196), as well as the varsity 4 B (8:42.408). In the championship-only varsity 4 C race, contested Sunday afternoon, Penn was fifth in 9:03.822.

As a team, Penn finished with 25 points which was enough for seventh place, ahead of Dartmouth (22). Princeton took the team title with 81 points, and also earned the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championships with a win in the varsity 8 grand final.
