PHILADELPHIA - The Penn women's rowing team is coming off a sterling performance at the Orange Challenge Cup a week ago, and the Quakers hope to keep that momentum going this weekend as they challenge Cornell and Rutgers for the Raritan Cup and the Class of '89 Plaque. This year's races will be hosted by Cornell Saturday morning on Cayuga Lake in Ithaca, N.Y.

The Raritan Cup is given to the school that wins the varsity eight race; the Class of '89 Plaque is given to the school that accumulates the most points over the course of the day's races

Penn has had success with both trophies in recent history, however the Quakers would like nothing more than to bring them both home as they currently reside in Ithaca with the Big Red. Penn most recently won the Raritan Cup race in 2009 (the third of a three-year run), and held the Class of '89 Plaque following the 2007 and 2008 races.

Supplanting Cornell will be a tough assignment. The Big Red is 12th in this week's CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll, while Penn -- coming off its first varsity 8 win in the Orange Challenge Cup since 1995 -- is the first team receiving votes after cracking the Top 20 for two straight weeks. Rutgers is unranked.

"We are excited to get back to racing after our successes last weekend," said Head Coach Mike Lane. "Cornell and Rutgers will be great competitors, and we are really looking forward to getting a chance to put our hard work to the test. Cornell is ranked 12th in the country, so this is an opportunity for us to make an dramatic impact on our goals for the spring season."
