ITHACA, N.Y. - The Penn women's rowing team was unable to pull hardware away from Cornell on Saturday morning, taking second in both the Raritan Cup and the Class of '89 Plaque.
In the varsity 8 Raritan Cup race, Cornell kept possession of the trophy by covering the 2,000-meter course in 6:29.38. That was more than four seconds ahead of Penn (6:33.64), who was well ahead of third-place Rutgers (6:46.75).
Cornell also won the overall points to keep possession of the Class of '89 Plaque. Penn's only win came in the varsity 4 A race, while the Big Red swept every other race.
In the varsity 4 A race, Penn's time of 7:23.85 was nearly eight seconds ahead of Cornell (7:31.25) and more than 50 seconds ahead of Rutgers (8:15.24).
Cornell won the second varsity 8 race in 6:39.26, followed by Penn (6:45.42) and Rutgers (7:04.51). The third varsity 8 race also went to the Big Red, whose time of 7:05.37 defeated Penn (7:12.20) and Rutgers (7:45.46). In the varsity 4 B, Cornell's winning time of 7:28.77 was well ahead of Penn (7:45.77), while in the varsity 4 C Cornell (7:37.30) beat Penn (8:19.80).
Penn returns to action next weekend, facing Dartmouth and Princeton for the Class of 1984 Award Plaque. Those races will take place Saturday in Hanover, N.H.
