PHILADELPHIA - The Penn women's rowing team enjoyed a successful day on the water at the Navy Day Regatta Saturday, earning first place in four different classifications and taking second in the varsity eight race.
Penn's varsity eight took second place behind Navy -- the Middie women covered the Schuylkill River's three-mile course 14:23.81, ahead of Penn's 14:29.17. Penn's B boat was fourth in the 20-boat field, clocking 14:43.23, while the Quakers' C boat was 16th in 16:12.23.
Penn won the second varsity field in 14:20.52, just ahead of Drexel (14:22.64). The Quakers' B boat was seventh in the class, clocking 15:12.88.
Penn's victory in the varsity four class came in 15:31.80, ahead of second-place Rutgers (15:40.30). The Quakers' B boat was third, in 15:53.21.
Penn's win in the Novice 8 field was clocked at 14:21.08, well ahead of the other seven boats in the field -- second-place Drexel covered the course in 14:44.37. The Quakers then had a 1-2 sweep in the six-boat novice 4 class, as the A boat went first in 16:10.50 and the B boat was second in 16:21.45.
Penn returns to action at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta on Oct. 23, and then competes in the Head of the Schuylkill regatta on on Oct. 29.
