PHILADELPHIA - Senior captain Kyle Derham and junior defensive back Josh Powers of the University of Pennsylvania football team were each named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District First Team on Thursday as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). As first-team honorees, the two are now eligible to be selected to the Academic All-America team.
Powers is enrolled in Penn's prestigious Wharton school for business with a management concentration. The Fishers, Ind., native holds a 3.51 GPA in the Ivy League's top-ranked business school. Despite missing some time earlier this season due to injury, Powers is third on the team in tackles with 40, has one interception and four pass breakups for a defense that ranks first in the Ivy League in rushing defense, total defense, tackles for loss, scoring defense, sacks, turnover margin and pass efficiency defense.
Derham is also a part of the Wharton school with a concentration in finance. Wharton, where the Charlotte, N.C., native has maintained a GPA of 3.35, has consistently been ranked as the top business school in the country. On the field, Derham has served as Penn's top wide receiver. One week removed from scoring the game-winning touchdown in overtime at Brown, Derham is the team leader with 22 receptions. He has started every game for the Quakers this season and has totaled 205 receiving yards to date.
The Quakers will host archrival Princeton Saturday on Homecoming at Franklin Field. The game will be televised locally on The Comcast Network. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m.
