PHILADELPHIA – The men and women of the University of Pennsylvania cross country teams will compete in the Main Line Invitational hosted by Haverford College on Thursday. On the mile loop course, the women will race three miles at 5:30 p.m. and the men will follow with four. The Main Line Invitational is the second meet for the Quakers in the 2013 season.
Penn will see fellow Big 5 rivals La Salle and Villanova as well as other programs from the Philadelphia region. The Haverford men have been tabbed in the Centennial Conference preseason coaches’ poll as the number one cross country team; the women are ranked second. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association also released their poll: the men earned the number two spot and the women are 12th.
For the first race of the season, the Quakers competed in the Friend Big 5 Invitational at the Belmont Plateau on Friday, September 13. The women ran a 4K and took third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh place in the race, and the men ran a 6K and grabbed 10th place in the competitive field of runners.
Taking the top finish for the women and third overall was freshman Cleo Whiting, with a time of 14:29.37. She was followed by Elyssa Gensib (14:33.89), Madison Holleran (14:36.41), Gabriella Cuccia (14:37.57), and Chelsea Delaney (14:44.81). On the men’s side, senior Conor Nickel finished first for the Quakers and 10th overall with a time of 18:58.36.
