USTFCCCA All-America Release

PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Maalik Reynolds and sophomore Leslie Kovach were each officially named All-Americans by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday. Reynolds was named a first team honoree and Kovach earned honorable mention recognition.

Kovach is just the second women's outdoor All-American in school history. The only other to do so was Chris Lundy who accomplished the feat in the 3,000 meters in 1992. Kovach finished in 16:16.10 to place 18th in the nation in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday night.

With his seventh-place finish in the high jump at the NCAA Championships on Friday, Reynolds ensured he would be the first Penn men's outdoor All-American since Courtney Jaworski earned the honor in the 800 meters in 2005. Reynolds scored for Penn at the NCAA championship meet with his height of 2.14 meters (7 feet, 1/4 inches).

Reynolds completed a tremendous freshman campaign. He qualified for the Indoor NCAA Championships in March, but was unable to compete due to illness. He holds the school record in the indoor and outdoor high jump. He was named First-Team All-Ivy during the indoor and outdoor track seasons after he claimed both Heptagonal Championships. He was also named the Co-Most Outstanding Performer at Outdoor Heps in addition to claiming the indoor IC4A title and Penn Relays title.

Kovach, who is the school record-holder in the indoor and outdoor 5,000 meters as well as the 10,000 meters, closed a stellar 2010-11 campaign. She was All-Ivy and all-region during the cross country season. Then during the indoor track season, she earned All-East honors in the 5,000 meters. In the outdoor campaign, Kovach claimed All-East honors in the 3,000 meters. The Irwin, Pa., native also ranks among the top six all-time at Penn in both the indoor and outdoor 3,000 meters.

Several Quakers will be competing later this month at the USA Junior Track and Field Championships, June 23-25. PennAthletics.com will have a full recap of all the Penn performances.
