NEW YORK CITY - The women's cross country team proved lightning can strike the same place twice on Saturday, finishing the Iona Meet of Champions in second place for the second year running at New York City's Van Cortlandt Park. After losing by two to Iona a season ago, the Quakers fell 13 points short of Army this time around, tallying 76 points to the Black Knights' 63.

Once again, Leslie Kovach led the way for the Quakers, finishing her 6K in a time of 22:40.07 and in fourth place overall. Following her was Kersie Jhabvala, who in two races this season has shown she may be ready to step into the forefront of the Penn line-up. Jhabvala crossed the finish line in 23:01.84, placing seventh.

Margaret Diacont was dependable as always, closing out the race in 12th place with a time of 23:16.72. Freshmen Elyssa Gensib and Shannon McCarthy were the final two Penn scorers. Gensib wrapped up in 23rd position, clocking in at 23:46.84, while McCarthy was 30th with a time of 24:01.87.

In what can only be taken as a good sign, the Quakers finished 64 points clear of fellow Ivy League Columbia. The Lions finished in sixth place as a team.

Penn looks to build on this performance when they compete two weeks hence at the Paul Short Invitational. The Sept. 28 race will get started from Bethlehem, Pa. at 11 a.m.
