Women's Track & Field Finishes Ninth at Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Behind several ECAC qualifying performances, the University of Pennsylvania women's track & field team finished ninth at Penn State's Sykes and Sabock Challenge Cup on Saturday in State College, Pa.

Penn finished ninth as a team with 26 points. Among the 14 schools at the meet, Penn State claimed the team title on its home track with 177.5 points.

Junior Chelsea Delaney, who had already posted an ECAC time in the mile, hit that mark again as she broke five minutes in the event for the second straight week. She scored for the Quakers with her eighth-place effort of 4:58.87. Teammate Elyssa Gensib also broke five minutes, but was just outside the qualifying time with a ninth-place showing of 4:59.35.

Penn's pole vaulters continued to excel for yet another week. Senior Davielle Brown cleared 3.75 meters (12 feet, 3 1/2 inches). Only one other competitor cleared a higher bar and Brown finished third after the tiebreakers. Senior Jillian Hart was fifth with a clearance of 3.60 meters (11-09.75 ft.).

Of the 30 competitors in the 60-meter hurdles, junior Gabby Piper was sixth overall. She won her heat with a time of 8.83 and then finished the finals in 8.76.

Sophomore Kersie Jhabvala scored in the 3,000 meters. She was seventh in the event at 10:05.23. Meanwhile, in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, Maragaret Diacont was fourth and Amy Darlington was fifth. The two scored for the Quakers with times of 6:56.44 and 7:15.04, respectively.

Next week Penn travels to the Armory for Friday's Rider/Lafayette Invitational.
