PHILADELPHIA - Kelsey Hay, Sam Mattis and Brendan Smith were all named All-Academic by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Wednesday. In addition, both the Penn men's and women's programs were honored as USTFCCCA All-Academic teams.

Individuals earn the academic honor for their combined efforts in competition and in the classroom. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic track and field team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA list; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in the NCAA Division I Championships.

Hay, Smith and Mattis each reached the NCAA Outdoor Championships last season. Hay was a second-team All-Ivy honoree in the javelin and is currently second all-time at Penn in the event. Mattis competed in the First Round of the NCAA Championships after he set the school record in the discus and won the heptagonal championship with a meet record toss in the event. Smith qualified for the NCAA meet in the steeplechase and reached Penn's all-time top 10 in the event with the eighth-fastest time (9:00.58) in school history. Smith and teammate Thomas Awad will also represent the Quakers at the Pan-American Junior Championships in Colombia in August.

A total of 187 women's institutions and 111 men's program's earned the All-Academic team distinction as a result of earning a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or higher. The Penn men finished with a cumulative GPA of 3.15, while the women combined for a 3.16 GPA.
