BELMONT, Mass. - Penn started out the Hoehn Cup on the right foot Friday, defeating Bates 7-2 in quarterfinal action. The Quakers will now advance to the semifinal round where they will face No. 11 Williams, who won 8-1 against Middlebury.

Four of the Quakers' victories over Bates came in 3-0 sweeps. Dan Greenberg, Porter Drake, William Browne, and John Dudzik all posted shutout victories. The most impressive of these victories came from Greenberg, who only allowed 12 points to his opponent in the entire match.

Trevor McGuinness and Daniel Judd, playing at number six and seven respectively both battled to tough 3-1 victories in their opening match. McGuinness lost in the tiebreaker to start the match, but then nearly went without allowing a point in the second before winning 11-1. After that, he won the third game tiebreaker and took the fourth game to take the match. Judd took the first two games of his match 11-6 before falling in the third game tiebreak. He then posted an 11-8 victory in the fourth game to claim the number seven position.

Justin Ang pulled out the Quakers lone five-game win on the day at number nine. Ang split the first four games, winning the first and third. He then took the decisive game 11-5 to win the match.

Both of the Quaker's losses came in hard fought 3-2 fashion. Thomas Mattsson dropped the first game in his match, but rallied to take the next two. However, he could not close the deal in the top position. James Clark followed that very same pattern. After taking a 2-1 lead into the fourth game, Clark dropped a tiebreaker and then an 11-8 fifth game at number three.

The Quakers will now be in action tomorrow at noon against No. 11 Williams, a team that the Penn defeated earlier in the year. Bates will drop to the consolation bracket and take on Middlebury.

In the top half of the bracket, No. 9 Western Ontario cruised to the semi-finals with a 9-0 victory over Navy. It will meet Brown in the semi-finals, who will be coming off of a close 5-4 win against St. Lawrence. Both of the semi-final matches in the Hoehn Cup will take place at the same time on Saturday.
