CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - No. 10 Men's Squash advanced to the finals of the Hoehn Cup with a 6-3 victory over No. 11 Williams in semi-final action. On Saturday, the Quakers won one more match than they did in the previous meeting when Penn defeated the Ephs 5-4. The Quakers will now meet No. 9 Western Ontario tomorrow at noon. Western Ontario easily moved into the final after an 8-1 victory over Brown in the other semi-final.
In the tightly contested rematch, Penn earned just two sweeps on the day. After a convincing victory in the opening round, James Clark picked up another sweep in his semi-final match. Justin Ang picked up the only other sweep on the day with a victory at number nine.
Thomas Mattsson got some revenge over Will Morris from their earlier meeting. Mattsson and Morris went the full five games in the first meeting, but Mattsson earned the 3-1 victory this time around. Also winning in four games for Penn was freshman John Dudzik at number eight.
Four matches went the full five games with Penn winning half of those contests. Porter Drake picked up one of those five game victories at number four. Drake opened the match with a tiebreak victory, but found himself down 2-1 after three games. He then tied the match with an 11-8 victory in the fourth game and allowed just three points in the fifth. Fellow senior William Browne, playing number five, picked up the other five-game win. Browne found himself in a tied up match after dropping the fourth game tiebreak, but rebounded nicely with an 11-6 victory in the fifth. Both Trevor McGuinness and Daniel Judd battled hard in their matches, but would fall in the fifth game of their matches.
The Quakers will now look to defend their Hoehn Cup title from a year ago against an unfamiliar foe in Western Ontario tomorrow at noon.
In the consolation bracket of the Hoehn Cup, Saint Lawrence advanced to the consolation finals with a tight 5-4 victory over Navy. In the consolation finals, Saint Lawrence will go up against Middlebury, who also squeaked by with a narrow 5-4 win against Bates. The consolation final and the seventh-place match between Navy and Bates will both take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
