PHILADELPHIA – The No. 12 Penn men’s squash team (4-10, 1-6 Ivy) will begin its Hoehn Cup championship defense this weekend when it faces 13th-ranked Western Ontario (16-3) on Friday at noon at the Yale squash courts in New Haven, Conn. The Quakers and Mustangs have combined to win the past four B Division championships.
The Red and Blue trail Western Ontario, 11-3, in the all-time series, but have split the last four meetings. The last time these two programs met was on Feb. 27, 2011 in the Hoehn Cup final. The Mustangs won the title, 7-2, against a 10th-ranked Penn team with four current Quakers on it – Danny Greenberg, Daniel Judd, John Dudzik and Justin Ang.
Last season, Penn won its third Hoehn Cup in program history and second in three years. The Quakers defeated Columbia, 8-1, winning five matches in straight games, 3-0. Should the Red and Blue emerge victorious on Friday, its most likely semifinal opponent will be an Ivy rival, No. 9 Dartmouth (7-8, 2-5). The Big Green defeated Penn in Philadelphia on Jan. 13, 8-1, with the Quakers’ lone win coming from No. 8 Tyler Odell in five games.
