PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania’s head coach for squash, Jack Wyant, has announced the hiring of Gilly Lane C’07 as an assistant coach with the squash programs.

This marks Lane’s second tenure as an assistant coach under Wyant at Penn. Previously, the 2007 Penn graduate spent the 2010-11 season with the programs. That year, the women finished the 2010-11 season ranked fifth in the nation, while the men advanced to the Hoehn Cup final.

“Gilly’s return to Penn Squash is incredibly exciting,” said Wyant. “The administration worked hard to lure him back to the program, and I am indebted to them and our Penn Squash Alumni Board for their help in his recruitment.

“Gilly’s energy, enthusiasm and expertise will pay immediate dividends. He is a world-class player and has refined his coaching skills over the past 24 months. Whenever you can hire a coach of his abilities -- who bleeds Red & Blue -- you do it!”

“It is good to be back,” said Lane. “I cannot tell you how excited I am being back at Penn. This is a place where I have had some of my most successful moments as a player and as a person. I truly believe in what the school stands for and its ability to prepare student-athletes for life after college.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to be welcomed back by my alma mater, and I look forward to working with Jack to make the program one of the top destinations for student-athletes.”

Lane’s hiring adds to an already impressive list of duties that he currently holds including assistant coach with the United States Junior Boys’ National Team; US Squash Board member; athlete representative for US Squash to the United States Olympic Committee (USOC); and member of US Squash’s Nominating Committee. In addition, he is owner of GL Squash and the GL Squash Camp.

The Philadelphia native has won three Professional Squash Association (PSA) titles, reached eight PSA Tour finals, and held a world ranking as high as 48th -- the second-best ranking ever for an American. A member of the US National Team since 2007, Lane has been runner-up at the US Nationals four times. In 2011, he helped the U.S. team to seventh at the World Championships in Paderborn, Germany, the team’s best finish at that event. Lane also was a member of the United States’ gold medal-winning men’s team at the 2008 Pan American Games in Cuenca, Ecuador.

Lane had an impressive college career at Penn, earning All-America, All-Ivy, and team MVP all four years, as well as serving as captain as a junior and senior. He was also the first Penn player to receive the College Squash Association's (CSA) Skillman Award, given to a player who exemplifies leadership, sportsmanship, and achievement over his career.

Lane graduated from Penn in 2007 with a B.A. in American History.
